Weighted Blankets for Autism

Just about everyone likes the snug feeling of being wrapped up in a blanket, and many children with autism are no different. But there’s more to it than wanting to be cozy and warm: Some children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or sensory processing disorder (SPD) benefit from pressure stimulation, and one way to provide this is using weighted or heavy blankets.

These blankets can be especially helpful for a child with autism who can’t tolerate being hugged, but still craves even pressure. Some of our blankets have PET pellets sewn into chambers for uniform distribution of weight, while others have pockets that allow you to add and customize the weight for your child, based on his or her weight and preference.

The Benefits of Weighted Blankets

The benefits of deep pressure therapy are both well-documented by researchers and experienced by parents of children everywhere with autism. If your child needs help reducing anxiety, overcoming sleep disorders, or solving other challenges, a weighted blanket could be the key.

That’s because weighted blankets are designed to mimic deep pressure therapy, shown to release oxytocin — otherwise known as the feel-good hormone — which calms the nervous system.

Weighted or heavy blankets are great for anytime use and are recommended by occupational therapists for a variety of reasons. If your child has trouble sleeping at night, a weighted blanket can do wonders to help him or her fall asleep. But these blankets aren’t just ideal for nighttime. You can drape a weighted blanket over your child’s lap or shoulders to help him or her study, concentrate, or just feel secure.

Finding the Right Weighted Blanket for Your Child

Our blankets come in a range of sizes and weights, from three to 20 pounds. You’ll want to choose the weight based on your child’s weight. While it’s best to check with your therapist to determine how much weight your child needs, our general guidelines are 10% of the person’s body weight, plus one pound.

Once you’ve determined the right weight, it’s up to you and your child to pick a favorite pattern, color and texture. Plus, don’t miss our blanket slipcovers for easy washing and extra tactile input.
